Playing with just seven players, the Greyhounds battled to the closing minutes before succumbing 91-76 to a talented Northeast Mississippi Community College squad ranked #18 in the latest NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Poll.
The Greyhounds, playing without injured players Caleb Allen, Jeremiah Jones, Braxtyn McCuien, and T.J. Stewart, faced a Tiger team who featured two guards, Kylan Blackmon and Ken Lewis, averaging a stunning 29 and 26 points per game, respectively. The two guards showed why early in the first half before the Greyhound defense adjusted as Northeast took a slim 45-42 halftime lead.
Then in the second half, Northeast slowly began pulling away behind an offensive rebound attack that resulted in several putbacks. The Tigers led by 10 points, 59-49, at the 14:29 mark and eventually stretched it to 14 with 9:27 remaining. But the Greyhounds refused to go away as they battled back to trail 76-69 with 5:06 left to play. But the teams traded baskets as the Greyhounds could not get closer than 81-74 with 2:48 remaining, and ASU Mid-South then put up several three's that didn't find the mark and the Tigers used a couple of offensive rebound putbacks and free throws to end the game on a 10-2 run for the final margin.
The Greyhounds (2-2) next return to The Dog House Thursday as they host Central Baptist College JV at 6:00pm.
