In the second game of the opening night of the Greyhound Tip-Off Classic, the Jones Bobcats defeated the hosting Greyhounds 88-76 behind stellar shooting.
They Greyhounds opened up the game on a 9-3 run within the first three minutes of the game thanks to a pair of 3 pointers from Jesse Washington, and one by Darren Wallace. Jones responded with their own 16-2 run capped by a 3 point basket by Samarion Grant over the next 5 minutes. Jones took a 17 point lead with 4:36 remaining in the 1st half, before the Greyhounds would outscore the Bobcats 15-8 to end the first half.
Jones would open the 2nd half on a 7-0 run in the two minutes of the half. The Bobcats would take their largest lead of the game when they took a 61-40 with 16 minutes left in the game. The Greyhounds would not go away easily as they kept battling back cutting the lead to as little as 8 with 7:30 left in the half, but that is as close as they would get before trading baskets back and forth with the Bobcats to end the game.
"I was very happy to see the amount of fight our guys had, especially when we got down big in the first half. It would of been real easy for them to drop their heads, and let the lead expand to 30 but they kept with it and gave ourselves a chance to make a run for it in the final 8 minutes. I'm anxious to see how we bounce back tomorrow against a talented Northwest Mississippi team," head coach Cody Hastings said after the game.
The Greyhounds were led by sophomore guard, Jesse Washington who had 31 points on 10-14 shooting and 8-12 from 3. Freshman Darren Wallace had 16 in his debut, and sophomore Je'Marion Westbook pitched in 14.
Next up for the Greyhounds is Northwest Mississippi, November 4th at 2:00pm in The Dog House on the final day of the Greyhound Tip-Off Classic.
