"I couldn't be more proud of how our guys came out and executed the game plan on what we wanted to do. They bought in and everyone was having success. I couldn't be anymore proud of them. We'll enjoy it for the rest of the day, but we're right back to work tomorrow and getting ready for a really good team in Northeast Mississippi coming to our place Tuesday night." Head coach Cody Hastings had to say after the game.
Both teams struggled to score to start the game until ASU Mid-South's Darren Wallace found a cutting Je'Marion Westbrook for the bucket and the foul. Westbrook would go on to complete the 3 point play. That woke Jackson State up as just a few seconds later Shawn Brown Jr. would drive and find Joshua Burchett for their own layup. Both teams would start to trade baskets over the next couple of minutes, but the Greyhounds never found themselves trailing. Mid-South would soon settle in as their defense really started to ramp up and would cause two shot clock violations in 3 possessions. They Greyhounds would go on a 13-3 run over the next 3 and a half minutes to lead by 16 with 7:33 left in the first half. The Greyhound defense seemed to just keep getting stronger making it hard for Jackson State to really find their groove, while they were taking advantage of it and getting out in transition led by alley oops from Kyrin Dock to both Je'Marion Westbrook and Darren Wallace. ASU Mid-South would take a 52-21 lead after the first half of play.
ASU Mid-South's defense would pick up right where it left off in the first half causing 5 turnovers on Jackson State's first 6 possessions of the half, starting the 2nd half on a quick 9-0 run in the first 3 minutes of the half capped off by a goal tending call on a Kyrin Dock dunk attempt. The Greyhounds would take a 44 point lead, their largest of the game on a layup by Je'Marion Westbrook in transition on a pass from fellow sophomore Jesse Washington with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game. They Greyhounds had a total team effort as 9 of the 10 players who saw action got in the scoring column.
ASU Mid-South was led by sophomore Je'Marion Westbrook who notched his 4th double double of the season with 32 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Washington had 20, which is his 6th game of the season scoring 20 or more. Davonta Tucker and Samuel Chapin rounded out the double digit scoring as Tucker had 12 and Chapin with 11. Tucker also finished with 8 rebounds. Dock had a game high 8 assist.
The Greyhounds are back at home on Tuesday, December 12 as they host Northeast Mississippi with tip-off set for 7:30. The Greyhounds traveled to Northeast Mississippi back on November 7th which found them dropping the game 86-68.
