"In a new system rivarly, it's good to make a statement and we did that tonight. Our guys came out and competed and did what they had to do. It's fun to watch these guys go out and have fun doing what they love to do. Shots didn't fall early, but to hold them to just 2 points in the first almost 8 minutes of the 2nd half is beautiful. Defensively we got after it and our offense followed. I'm really proud of them, and we just need to keep going. Day by day, game by game. We'll get ready to head to North Ark Monday which is never an easy place to play. We have to get back locked in, but I'm ready to get back to work." head coach Cody Hastings had to say after the game.
In a game that started out quite sloppy, the Greyhounds broke the ice first on a Je'Marion Westbrook layup. A game that had only 8 points scored in the first 5 minutes, the Aviators would grab a quick 3-2 lead then a quick 6-5 lead but once the Greyhounds took the lead from there they would only find themselves in front. The Greyhounds would turn that into a 7 point lead, which the Aviators would battle back from and cut it to a one possession game, twice. It was the Greyhounds who would then finish the half on a 6-0 run capped by a Kyrin Dock layup giving the Greyhounds a 28-20 lead heading into halftime.
Mid-South would go on a 17-2 run in the first 8 minutes to start the 2nd half. The Aviators would be playing catch up for the rest of the game, but it was just too little too late. Mid-South did not slow down and kept using their defense to produce more offensive opportunities led by Je'Marion Westbrook's 18 2nd half points.
The Greyhounds were led by Jesse Washington who finished the game with the 2nd ever triple double in school history recording 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Je'Marion Westbrook capped off a hot week scoring 29 points and pulling down 14 rebounds for his 8th double double of the season. Samuel Chapin was back in double figures scoring 11. Darren Wallace had 9, Chris Martin with 7, Kyrin Dock, Markese Bolden, and Ian Rios all finished with 2 points.
ASU Mid-South will travel to Harrison, Arkansas to face off against the Pioneers of North Arkansas. North Ark defeated the Greyhounds 83-79 back on January 25. Tip-off is set for 7:30.
The Greyhounds final home game is a week from tonight, Thursday, February 22nd. It is also sophomore night as we prepare to honor our sophomore Greyhounds.
