The Lady Greyhounds played well enough to win, but couldn't pull off the upset on the road as they fell 88-85 in double overtime to Northwest Mississippi Community College.
After leading 38-36 at the half, ASU Mid-South used a stingy defense and back-to-back transition baskets to take a 51-39 lead halfway through the third quarter, and led 56-49 going into the last frame of regulation.
But the Lady Rangers would come back in the fourth quarter and tie the score at 70 to force overtime. Then with 17 seconds remaining in the extra period, the Lady Greyhounds were down four points with the ball. After scoring quickly, ASU Mid-South then stole the inbounds pass and scored again to force the second overtime period tied at 83.
Then with 55 seconds left, Haley Morgan put the Lady Greyhounds on top, 85-84, before ASU Mid-South was called for a foul on the other end giving the Lady Rangers two free throws and the lead. ASU Mid-South then turned the ball over with less than 30 seconds to go and Northwest Mississippi hit two more free throws for the final count.
Samantha Jackson led the Lady Greyhounds with 21 points, seven rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Sable Greer finished with 20 points, Rachel Gramling scored 13, and Haley Morgan and Alesha Penister both chipped in eight points.
The Lady Greyhounds are back on the road Thursday as they travel to Goodman, Mississippi, to take on Holmes Community College. They return to The Dog House on Monday, November 14, as they host Columbia State, a team they beat 88-38 in the first game of the season.
