Despite holding the North Arkansas College Lady Pioneers without a three-pointer, ASU Mid-South lost a 79-69 decision Saturday at The Dog House in West Memphis.
After a 26-15 second quarter gave the Lady Greyhounds a 39-35 halftime lead, North Arkansas came back in the third quarter to take a 55-54 lead into the final period. But after ASU Mid-South's Timyja Threlkeld's eurostep layup cut the lead to 68-66 with 3:53 remaining, the Lady Pioneers put together a 9-0 run that only ended with a Kassandra Martinez three-pointer with 35.4 seconds left for the Lady Greyhounds' final points of the game.
ASU Mid-South shot just 31.9% from the field to the Lady Pioneers' 49.1%, and came out just shy on the boards, 41-37, despite collecting 18 offensive rebounds. Aryah Hazley led the scoring with 23 points, Kya Washington scored 12 points, and Quintasia Leatherwood chipped in 10 points as Jazzmen Robinson pulled down 12 rebounds to go with 5 points.
The loss drops the Lady Greyhounds (15-10, 4-5) to a tie for third place in NJCAA Region 2 play with one game remaining Saturday, February 25, at National Park College, a team they defeated at home, 72-45, on January 26. Based on the outcome of that game and the UA Cossatot at North Arkansas game, the Lady Greyhounds could find themselves anywhere between the third and fifth seeds. Regardless, ASU Mid-South will be playing a region tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday, March 1, at 6:00pm. If they finish with the third or fourth seed, then they will host the game, but if getting the fifth seed they will travel to play at the fourth seed's gym.
