Lady Greyhounds Sweep Jackson State

WEST MEMPHIS, Arkansas --- After a one-sided thrashing against Southwest Tennessee last Thursday evening, the MSCC Lady Greyhounds looked more like themselves on Saturday afternoon against Jackson State. 

MSCC rallied from three different one-point deficits late in the second half to make the game's final run, to clinch a 71-66 win, their fifth victory in their last seven outings. 

During that stretch, MSCC's only two losses have come to Southwest Tennessee, a Division I school. 

West Memphis native Kierra Adams celebrated her return to the MSCC lineup after missing Thursday's contest by scoring 14 and helping her team stay even on the boards after losing the rebounding battle against Southwest Tennessee.

"When you got Kierra back, it makes the team better," Andy Stoglin, MSCC's head coach, said after the game. "The most important thing today was that we're out-of-shape, but I think that team (Jackson State) is about as bad out-of-shape as we are."

Stoglin cited his team's lack of conditioning after the Southwest Tennessee game. His team was off for almost two weeks over the Christmas holidays. 

MSCC got a team-high 21 points from forward Victoria Broady, Adams's 14 points, 11 from Earle native LaCordia Williams and 10 from Dominique Dillard. 

Jackson State was led in scoring by Quinnisha Thomas's game-high 23 points, 14 from Andrea Moffitt, 13 from Chelsea Wyatt and 11 from Keisha Morrell to account for all of the visitor's double-digit scorers. 

In a nip-and-tuck first half, MSCC was able to take a 34-33 lead to the locker rooms, despite hitting just 14 of their 36 shot attempts in the first 20 minutes. 

While that mark was hardly sterling, the Lady Greyhounds owned the boards 28-22 in that frame while Jackson State connected on just three-of-12 of their free throws. 

The first half also played host to some sloppy ball-handling with MSCC turning it over 12 times and Jackson State losing nine possessions to turnovers. 

Each team hit just 33-percent of their shots in the second half as the defenses went to work on each other. 

MSCC was able to make the game's final run, finishing the game on a 10-3 spurt to clinch the victory. 

Stoglin said after the game that he had to buy as much time as possible to get Adams and Dominique Dillard back into the game. 

"I know that they each had three fouls early in the second half," Stoglin said of his two starters. "Some players you can play with three or four fouls, but they only have one way to play, and that's wide-open." 

With Dillard and Adams back into the lineup, MSCC was able to close out their pesky visitors from Jackson State. 

MSCC will face a five-game road swing before returning home to host North Arkansas on February 14 at The Dog House.
