The Lady Greyhounds used a triple-double by Alesha Penister and a couple of tough defensive stops down the stretch to take a 62-58 overtime victory over Itawamba Community College Thursday at The Dog House.
Down by three points, the Lady Greyhounds came out of a timeout and found Jayla Woods who hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the score and send the game to overtime.
It was then Penister who got a steal, and then broke a tie with 50 seconds remaining in overtime with an offensive rebound and putback that turned into a traditional three-point play after she got fouled on the shot. The Lady Greyhounds then got two defensive stops in a row and Taylor Simmons hit a free throw for the final tally.
Penister finished with a team-high 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists while Simmons hit for 12 points, De'Janice Hamilton scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Summer Abram and Teiangula Boston scored 9 points each.
The Lady Greyhounds travel to Paragould, Arkansas, Monday to play the first game of a double-header at Crowley's Ridge College. The women tipoff at 5:00pm followed by the men at 7:00pm.
