Due to student-athlete ineligibility, the Lady Greyhound women's basketball program is forced to cancel the remainder of the 2018-19 season, effective immediately.
"This is an isolated situation, and we certainly plan to resume play for the 2019-20 season and beyond," said Athletic Director Chris Parker. "We are implementing an action plan to insure this does not happen in the future, and we look forward to the opportunity to build a much more stable program moving forward."
With the team down to four eligible student-athletes, the decision was made less than 24 hours from the time official grades were released for the fall semester in order to give as much advance notice as possible to teams on the Lady Greyhound schedule, and provide maximum time to take care of logistics such as transportation, notifying officials and alerting members of the game crew.
The Lady Greyhound program will resume play in the 2019-20 season as first-year head coach Mercedes Corona now turns her attention to recruiting student-athletes who fit the culture she is building.
"I look forward to adding high-character student-athletes who understand and want the opportunity to commit to being collegiate basketball players and 'building bricks' for the future of our program," Corona said. "I have a tireless work ethic and have been around successful programs, so I know what it takes and will add student-athletes who share my passion to get it done."
"Coach Corona was put in a tough position when hired in that she had only a couple of months to recruit for her first season, and that is tough on any coach because the higher quality student-athletes are going to have already committed elsewhere," said Parker. "Now that she will have a full season to recruit the type of student-athlete who fits our culture, I have every confidence this will be the beginning of the greatest days of the Lady Greyhound program."
The Lady Greyhounds will be looking to fill all 15 scholarship positions for the 2019-20 season.
