The Lady Greyhounds broke a 43-43 tie early in the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run in less than a minute, then held off the Lady Rangers down the stretch to take a 58-50 victory Friday over Northwest Mississippi Community College in the nightcap of the Lady Greyhound Classic held at The Dog House.
Northwest Mississippi led the entire first half and took a 35-26 lead into halftime. But ASU Mid-South battled back in the third quarter to lead 43-41 heading into the final period, and after a Lady Ranger bucket evened the score at 43-43, the Lady Greyhounds turned the tide. First, Kayla Griffin nailed a three-pointer at the 8:52 mark before ASU Mid-South got a stop and went right back to her as she nailed another three-pointer with 8:17 remaining. Then Lakeycia Bables stole the inbound pass and hit a layup at the 8:11 mark, and as Northwest tried to get the ball across halfcourt, Tae Leatherwood stole a pass, drove to the basket and found Bables underneath for the layup to give the Lady Greyhounds a 53-43 lead with 7:58 left to play. The Lady Rangers would not get closer than six points the rest of the way.
Kayla Griffin led the way with 21 points and hit five three-pointers for the game while Leatherwood finished with 11 points and Lakeycia Bables chipped in 10 points.
The Lady Greyhound Classic continues Saturday with National Park College taking on Northwest Mississippi at noon followed by ASU Mid-South (2-1) hosting Mineral Area College at 2:00pm.
