Lady Greyhounds Upset NorthArk in Harrison
After dropping both games in region play to the second-seeded North Arkansas Lady Pioneers, the Lady Greyhounds found the magic touch and earned a 69-59 victory Saturday at Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison to advance to Monday's Region 2 Tournament Championship Game.
After dropping both games in region play to the second-seeded North Arkansas Lady Pioneers, the Lady Greyhounds found the magic touch and earned a 69-59 victory Saturday at Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison to advance to Monday's Region 2 Tournament Championship Game.
The Lady Pioneers jumped out to an early lead to take a 13-6 advantage into the second quarter, but ASU Mid-South came back with 19 second-quarter points to trail just 26-25 at the half. Then the third-seeded Lady Greyhounds came out in the second half to outscore the host team 22-11 in the third period before playing even in the fourth quarter for the win.
ASU Mid-South held North Arkansas to just 35.8% shooting from the field and 20.0% from the three-point line while shooting 39.1% from the field and a dismal 0-of-12 from the arc. But with a 44-27 rebounding advantage including 17 offensive boards while forcing 18 turnovers, the Lady Greyhounds were able to take the win on the road.
Quintasia Leatherwood led the way with 21 points while Aryah Hazley scored 12 to go with a game-high 8 rebounds. Timyja Threlkeld poured in 11 points and Kya Washington chipped in 10 points.
The Lady Greyhounds (18-10) advance to the NJCAA Region 2 Tournament Championship Monday at Harding University's Rhodes-Reaves Field House in Searcy, Arkansas, to take on top-seeded Southern Arkansas University Tech (20-2), ranked 13th in the final national rankings. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pm and will be followed by the men's game featuring the Greyhounds and National Park College at 7:30pm. The winner will advance to the Central Plains District Championship and host North Central Missouri College Saturday, March 11, with the winner of that advancing to the NJCAA National Tournament March 21-25 in Port Huron, Michigan.
