Leading virtually the entire game, the Greyhounds saw their lead disappear in the last three minutes, dropping a tough 71-68 decision to SAU Tech Saturday in The Dog House.
ASU Mid-South (20-8) took a 44-38 lead at the half as Jalen Lynn and Christian White scored 10 points each to lead the Greyhound charge. But the Rockets kept chipping away and finally took their first lead at the 3:17 mark with a transition three-pointer for a 62-61 margin. The Greyhounds came back with a Zach Byrd layup to reclaim the lead at 63-62 with 3:00 left to play.
But SAU Tech then took control, scoring five consecutive points before a Caleb Henry layup pulled the Greyhounds within 2 with 20.7 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Greyhounds fouled and the Rockets hit both free throws to set up a frenzied final 15 seconds that featured a trey from Caleb Henry and a transition dunk from the Rockets for the final margin.
Jalen Lynn led the Greyhounds with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, and Christian White (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Zach Byrd (15 points, 14 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles. Shaheed Halk also chipped in 10 points to go with a game-high 6 assists. Playing their third game in four days, the Greyhounds managed to shoot a paltry 36.5% from the field and an anemic 20.8% from the three-point line while hitting only 9-of-21 free throws.
The Greyhounds return to The Dog House Monday at 6:00pm for Sophomore Night against Central Baptist College JV before hosting North Arkansas College Saturday at 1:00pm for the NJCAA Region 2 Championship game.
