Down 11 at the half, the Greyhounds clawed their way back to take a lead in the second half only to come up short at the end, falling 80-71 at SAU Tech Monday in East Camden, Arkansas.
In the first half, both teams played even most of the half until SAU Tech went on a 13-3 run on the way to a 40-29 halftime lead. The Rockets hit 6 three-pointers in the half as the Greyhounds struggled to put points on the board.
But opening the second half, ASU Mid-South mounted a comeback that resulted in a 65-64 lead off a traditional three-point play by Kylon McCullough. But with less than three minutes to go, SAU Tech capped off a 10-2 run with a three-pointer and the Greyhounds were forced to foul down the stretch to turn a one-possession game into a three-possession win for the Rockets.
Kylon McCullough led ASU Mid-South with 20 points to go with 7 rebounds, and Sam Smith registered his 7th double-double of the season scoring 17 points and pulling down 14 boards. Kevin Fulton scored 9 points, Spencer Simes finished with 8 points and 3 assists, and J.T. Smith chipped in 6 points, 3 assists and a team-high 4 steals.
SAU Tech (14-4, 8-1) has now clinched the #1 seed in the NJCAA Region 2 Tournament held April 3-10 at home sites. The Greyhounds have two remaining games left on the schedule, hosting North Arkansas College Saturday and National Park College Monday. Two wins would guarantee the Greyhounds the #2 seed in the tournament with a first-round bye and a home game in the semifinals.
