The Greyhounds led by five with less than four minutes to go, but Dallas College-North Lake battled back to tie and send the game into overtime before taking away a 73-70 victory at The Dog House in the second game of the Greyhound Tip-Off Classic.
ASU Mid-South had three shots under the 20-second mark to break a 64-64 tie but could not get a shot to fall, and were then awarded the ball on an offensive team rebound with 9.1 seconds left. But on the ensuing possession, North Lake caused a turnover out of bounds and had a chance to win with 5.5 seconds left. However, a shot just inside the three-point line was off the mark and the game went to overtime.
In the extra period, the teams traded free throws before North Lake blocked a shot and got a layup in transition to go up 68-66 with 3:03 remaining. Christian Thompson would then hit 1 of 2 free throws to pull within one, but North Lake got a steal and ended up picking up a loose ball after Tim Johnson's blocked shot to hit another layup and take a 70-67 lead with 2:09 remaining. Thompson would again hit 1 of 2 free throws to pull within 2 points, and Sam Smith hit a layup off a nice feed from J.T. Smith to tie the game at 70-70 with 1:26 left. North Lake then missed a chance to take the lead but got an offensive rebound and putback to go up 72-70 with 56.0 seconds to go. The Greyhounds could not score the remainder of the game and North Lake added a free throw for the final count.
Sam Smith led all scorers with 23 points and 16 rebounds while Christian Thompson scored 15 and J.T. Smith finished with 12 points and 8 assists. The Greyhounds held North Lake to 32.9% shooting from the field and 25.0% shooting from the three-point line, but gave up 26 offensive rebounds and shot just 38.2% from the field and 18.8% from the arc.
The Greyhounds fall to 1-1 on the season and next face the 20th-ranked Parkland College Cobras Saturday at 2:00pm following Saturday's first game at noon featuring Dallas College-North Lake against National Park College.
