Shorthanded Greyhounds Continue to Battle Top Competition

Shorthanded Greyhounds Continue to Battle Top Competition

The Greyhounds shot season lows in all three categories as Dyersburg State Community College broke open a tied game at the half and took a 73-60 win Wednesday in Dyersburg, Tennessee.

Despite shooting an anemic 31.5% from the field, 14.3% from the three-point line and 44.4% from the free throw line, the Greyhounds found themselves tied at 32-32 at the half after seven first-half lead changes.

But midway through the second half in a one-point game, the Eagles' Montrez Ward hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Dyersburg a 7-point lead. The Greyhounds kept battling and later in the half had cut the lead down to four points, but Jordan Smith finished a traditional three-point play and the Greyhounds did not get closer than 7 points the rest of the way with the 13-point final score the Eagles' largest lead of the game.

ASU Mid-South again was down to just eight healthy bodies as the Greyhounds have yet to play a game this season with their full team intact. Sam Smith, the Greyhounds' returning All-American and leading scorer and rebounder, did not play after being diagnosed with a broken foot the day after the Northwest Mississippi game on November 29, and Mekhai Washington and Braxtyn McCuien were both out as well. The Greyhounds' four losses this season have been to three NJCAA Division I colleges with a combined record of 22-3 and all listed in the National Rankings, and an overtime loss to Dallas College-North Lake who is currently ranked #4 in the NJCAA Division III National Poll with four wins over NJCAA Division I programs.

The Greyhounds (4-4) return to The Dog House Saturday for a matchup with Itawamba Community College (6-1) out of Fulton, Mississippi. The women will tipoff the action at 2:00pm followed by the men's game scheduled for 4:00pm. Tickets are available through the athletic department's partner, HomeTown Ticketing, and can be purchased by selecting the TICKETS option at the top of the screen or by downloading the HomeTown Ticketing Fan app from your respective app store.
