The Greyhounds played their first game in a month, their first Region 2 game of the season, on the road and still took a 68-57 victory at South Arkansas Community College Thursday in El Dorado, Arkansas.
Playing after just one practice after the program was forced to quarantine for a week, ASU Mid-South traveled for their first region game of the season and has still not played a game with their full lineup due to COVID protocol and injuries. But the Greyhounds jumped out to a 10-point halftime lead and led by as many as 22 points in the second half before holding off the home team down the stretch. The South Arkansas Stars mounted a comeback attempt in the last three minutes of the game, cutting the Greyhound lead to 7 points, 64-57, with under a minute remaining. But ASU Mid-South finished the game with a 4-0 run for the final count.
Holding the Stars to just 27.1% shooting from the field and 19.0% (8-for-42) from the three-point line, ASU Mid-South won the battle of the boards, 58-50, but hit just 1-of-12 from the arc and turned the ball over 26 times to the Stars' 18 turnovers.
Sam Smith, playing his first game since late November after suffering a broken foot, led the charge with 16 points and 14 rebounds. T.J. Stewart came off the bench to score 11 points, and Tim Johnson added 10 points and 9 rebounds.
The Greyhounds (5-7, 1-0) next host the National Park College Nighthawks Saturday at 4:00pm in the second game of a double-header with the women.
