The Greyhounds could not overcome the St. Louis Community College Archers' advantages in falling 77-64 Monday in St. Louis.
Leading 33-30 at the half thanks to a last-second Jesse Washington three-pointer, the Greyhounds trailed 56-52 with just under ten minutes left in the second half when Jesse Washington was assessed a technical foul while talking with Greyhound Head Coach Chris Parker. While Parker avoided a technical foul despite being baited by the official, he was given his first warning of the season, and the heated discussion resulted in the Greyhounds allowing the Archers to finish the game with a 21-12 run thanks to 19 offensive rebounds.
ASU Mid-South shot better from the field and the three-point line than St. Louis and was 15-of-19 (78.9%) from the free throw line to the Archers 18-of-22 (81.8%). But the Greyhounds committed 13 turnovers to the Archer's 8 and gave up an 18-5 advantage in second-chance points.
Jesse Washington led all scorers with 20 points while shooting 5-of-11 (45.5%) from the three-point line and dishing out a game-high 6 assists to go with a team-high 5 rebounds. Jailen Anderson scored 15 points with 5 assists, and Christian Thompson chipped in 10 points.
The Greyhounds (20-9, 7-2) now turn their attention to Saturday's final game of the regular season at National Park College (17-8, 6-3) in Hot Springs which will finalize the seeding for the NJCAA Region 2 Tournament. With a 1-game lead in the region standings, a win gives the Greyhounds the regular season championship outright and the tournament's #1 seed while a loss would mean both teams would share the regular season title and seeding would then depend on the outcome of the South Arkansas at SAU Tech game. In that scenario if SAU Tech wins the Greyhounds would still receive the region's top seed, but a South Arkansas win would give National Park College the top seed and the Greyhounds would take the #2 seed. Regardless, ASU Mid-South has earned a bye in the region tournament quarterfinals and will host a semifinal game Saturday, March 4, at 3:00pm. The winners of the semifinals will meet in the NJCAA Region 2 Tournament Championship Game Monday, March 6, at 7:30pm at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.
