For almost two months, MSCC head coach Andy Stoglin has been pointing to the return of his two starting guards as a new beginning for his basketball team.
After their second straight win last Saturday afternoon, he's beginning to look like a prophet.
But nobody said it would be easy. Stoglin's Lady Greyhounds took a double-overtime win over Dyersburg State Community College on Saturday, topping the Lady Eagles 108-97, to improve to 3-8 on the season. The 108 points is the most scored by a Lady Greyhound team in the program's history.
MSCC took over in the second overtime period, hitting all four of their shots from the field, while limiting Dyersburg State to a three of 10 performance in the second extra period to outpace their visitors.
While Stoglin was more than happy with the win, he wasn't yet satisfied.
"We got a lot of work to do," the veteran basketball coach said after the game. "We have to start working on our defense. While those two guards (Sasha Giles and Victoria Broady) were out, we were turning it over 40 times a game, so we worked a lot on press offense, but with Sasha back, you know she'll take care of the ball."
MSCC still turned it over 27 times, but only four times in the extra periods. The Lady Greyhounds were able to force 30 turnovers.
The Lady Greyhounds outrebounded Dyersburg State 40-34, but were even on the boards at the end of regulation.
MSCC got a monster offensive effort from West Memphis native Kierra Adams. The sophomore post player finished her afternoon with 35 points and 14 rebounds.
Adams was excellent throughout the game, but freshman guard Ivory Thornton came alive in the second half.
With MSCC trailing 47-42 at halftime, Thornton came out and went on a personal 13-0 run, to lift the Lady Greyhounds from trailing 47-44, to taking a 57-47 lead that forced a Dyersburg State timeout.
"Her and Lacordia Williams are playing better now with Sasha back," said Stoglin. "Sasha is the type of guard that makes everybody better. They know that Sasha is gonna get them the ball, so they run to the corner and get ready to shoot."
Thornton would finish her night with 30 points of her own.
However, Dyersburg State would work their way back into the game, tying the game at 68-all after a Kayla Bolden three-point basket.
From that point on, nobody took more than a five-point lead until MSCC's hot shooting carried them home in the second overtime period.
Dyersburg State was led by Tamacha Couch's 18 points, and 18 from Ineisha Westbrook. The Lady Eagles also got 12 points from Stephanie Tipler.
MSCC topped Jackson State Community College last Thursday night 88-75 to end their eight-game losing streak.
The win over Dyersburg State was MSCC's second consecutive over a Division 1 opponent.
MSCC hits the road on Tuesday to play Southwest Tennessee Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Lady Greyhounds will host Rhema Bible College on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in what will be the school's final home game before the Christmas break.
