The Lady Greyhounds fell victim to a desperation shot at the buzzer that fell through the hoop, giving UA Cossatot a 65-63 win over ASU Mid-South Monday at The Dog House.
With 6:06 left in the fourth quarter, the Lady Greyhounds took a 55-54 lead on an Aaliyah Lee layup and held the lead until the Lady Colts tied it at 61-61 with just under two minutes remaining. Cierra Penn then hit a driving layup on the following possession to put ASU Mid-South back up by two, and after trading possessions with no score and a Lady Greyhound turnover, UA Cossatot got free for a layup to tie the score at 63-63 with 44 seconds to go.
On the ensuing possession, the Lady Greyhounds went inside to Lee who was fouled on the shot with 28.5 seconds left. But after two missed free throws, Cierra Penn grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled with 26.7 seconds left, and the Lady Greyhounds had the ball out of bounds with another opportunity to score. But when ASU Mid-South again tried to get the ball to Lee on the block, Lee was called for an offensive foul, and the Lady Colts had a chance to win the game with 4.1 seconds left.
UA Cossatot then called a timeout which advanced the ball in front of their own bench, and Kyaira Jackson's desparation running 16-footer hit the backboard hard before bouncing off the rim, popping straight up in the air and then rattling around the rim before it dropped through after the buzzer had sounded for the win.
Alindavia Lockett led ASU Mid-South with 16 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Aaliyah Lee and Cierra Penn both finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds each while Adrianne Chambers pulled down 9 rebounds and dished out a team-high 6 assists to go with 6 points. The Lady Greyhounds outrebounded the Lady Colts 55-31 but committed 24 turnovers and were called for 20 fouls to the visitor's 12 and shot just 4 free throws to UA Cossatot's 18.
The loss drops the Lady Greyhounds to 7-19 on the season with their final regular-season game this Saturday at home against North Arkansas College (18-6). Tipoff is Saturday at noon with Greyhound sophomores honored between games and the men's game following at 2:00pm.
