In their first game in 3 weeks, the Lady Greyhounds faced off against the Lady Pioneers of North Arkansas College for their first Region 2 game of the year after a few cancellations. It would be the Lady Pioneers escaping West Memphis with a narrow victory.
ASU Mid-South is battling some depth issues currently and only suiting out 5 players to begin the game, but that didn't stop the Lady Greyhounds from getting off to a hot start in the first quarter led by Ayanna Rutledge. Rutledge and the Lady Greyhounds came out firing as they took a quick lead and led the Lady Pioneers by 7 at the end of the first quarter. With only 5 players, the Lady Greyhounds began to slow down as they struggled to score in the second quarter only scoring 6 points in the second frame. Rutledge led all scorers in the first half scoring 20 of the Lady Greyhounds 28 points, as both teams would head to the locker room tied at 28.
To start the 3rd quarter, the Lady Pioneers took notice of Rutledge's hot start and quickly made an adjustment to try and deny her the ball for the rest of the game. Fellow sophomore Esther Kwagala and freshman Charalyn Rester and London Robinson would start to take advantage of their opportunities. The game would remain close once both teams took the floor, as it was the Lady Greyhounds who would take a slight advantage heading into the 4th and final period. Unfortunately for the Lady Greyhounds, the Lady Pioneers started to catch fire as they would score 32 points in the final period. During the 4th quarter, Richara Cooper would foul out for the Lady Greyhounds. Fortunately for the Lady Greyhounds, freshman Kiy'Ona Parker who initially was not going to play in tonight's game due to an ankle injury was in the scorers book so she would sub in to help her team finish the game. Unfortuntaly, the Lady Greyhounds just ran out of gas and would fall in the final minutes of the game.
The loss drops the Lady Greyhounds to 2-12 on the season and 0-1 in Region play. The Lady Greyhounds are back at home in The Dog House on Saturday, January 27 as they host Shorter College at 3:00 following the men's game at 1:00.
