The Lady Greyhounds were back in action after a Thursday night showdown with North Arkansas College as they hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Shorter College. Mid-South would run out of gas late and drop another close contest.
Shorter College would jump out quick on ASU Mid-South as they would take a 10 point advantage at the end of the first quarter, as the Lady Greyhounds struggled to find their rhythm early shooting only 16.7% in the first frame. Things would soon start to change as it was ASU Mid-South who would win the second quarter to gain momentum heading into the locker room at the half. Although the Lady Bulldogs shot a higher percentage than the Lady Greyhounds in the second quarter, the big difference was the two 3 point shots that the Lady Greyhounds hit and not allowing the Lady Bulldogs any long shots to fall. It was still Shorter who led 37-29 going into the locker room.
ASU Mid-South came out firing in the 2nd half as they would continue to be aggressive shooting 58.3% from the floor in the 3rd period. The Lady Greyhounds would use that aggression to their advantage as they would shoot 12 free throws in the 3rd quarter making 9 of them. It was the defense of the Lady Greyhounds that would prove to be the biggest difference maker holding the Lady Bulldogs to only 5 made field goals in the quarter. Mid-South saw themselves heading into the 4th quarter with a 2 point advantage and would keep the momentum going in the first couple minutes of the period and pushed the lead to 7 points. The Lady Bulldogs started to turn the pressure up, and would start to force the Lady Greyhounds into multiple turnovers leading into instant offense inside the paint, followed by five 3 pointers in just the 4th quarter alone. The Lady Bulldogs saved their best for the end, and the short handed Lady Greyhounds just ran out of gas late.
Sophomore Esther Kwagala led the Greyhounds scoring 18 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for her 2nd double double in a row. Freshman London Robinson had 19 points and 8 rebounds, and Ayanna Rutledge scored 19 with 4 assist.
The loss drops ASU Mid-South to 2-13 on the season and 0-2 in region play. The Lady Greyhounds head to El Dorado, Arkansas on Monday, January 29 as they are set to face off against South Arkansas College. Tip-off is set for 5:30.
