For the second year in a row, the Greyhounds are moving on a freshman as Cameron Ricks signed a National Letter of Intent with Drury University out of Springfield, Missouri, in a ceremony held on the ASU Mid-South campus.
Ricks, a 6'1" guard from Little Rock, Arkansas, was an NCAA qualifier coming out of Mills University Studies High School and was the top-scoring freshman for the Greyhounds this season averaging 11.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game as the only freshman starter. But it was his scoring efficiency that really set him apart as he shot an outstanding 52.3% from the field, 42.9% from the three-point line, and 76.7% from the free throw line.
"Cameron quickly established himself as an elite player on the college level," said ASU Mid-South head coach Chris Parker. "His work ethic is incredible and he can score very quietly in so many ways. He is a pure basketball player who simply knocks down the same boring jump shots, and that's one thing that makes him special," Parker said. "The other thing is that his approach to his education is the same as his approach on the court. Drury is getting a huge 'sleeper' and they will have him for three years."
Ricks was named to the NJCAA All-Region 2 second team for his play, and is going to a top-tier NCAA Division II program as the Panthers won the 2013 National Championship.
The Greyhounds finished the season in the NJCAA Region 2 Championship with an 18-11 record, tying the school record for wins in a season. The team finished seventh in the nation in scoring (92.8 points per game), first in rebounds (49.5 rebounds per game) and fifth in assists (21.3 assists per game), 18th in field goal percentage (.484) and 20th in rebound margin (11.3), all school records.
