Greyhounds Get Comeback Victory Over Stars

Down by two points with two minutes remaining, the Greyhounds went on a 14-8 run to finish the game in taking an exciting 109-105 comeback victory over West Kentucky Thursday night at The Dog House.

ASU Mid-South found themselves down 43-41 at the half as West Kentucky's quick pace resulted in several transition baskets while the Greyhounds struggled to find their rhythm. But led by Trevor Banks scoring 18 of his career-high 27 points in the second half, the Greyhounds exchanged the lead throughout until the Stars grabbed a two-point lead with two minutes to go.

It was then K.J. Patrick who came up biggest down the stretch, scoring nine of his career-high 18 points in the last two minutes. It started when Banks found the freshman cutting to the basket on consecutive trips, then on the next possession Patrick was fouled and sank two free throws, and on the ensuing defensive stand got a steal and a layup while also converting the free throw after being fouled on the play. Then with a two-possession lead and West Kentucky needing to foul, the Greyhounds got the ball to Terrandus Smith their last two possessions, and the freshman hit three-of-four free throws to complete the scoring.

Patrick finished with his third double-double on the season with 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals while Banks' 27 points capped off an outstanding performance to go with 14 rebounds, six assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

Teverette Cain came off the bench to record two career-high performances of 20 points and eight assists, and Dee Montgomery and Smith finished with 14 points each.

The Greyhounds shot a respectable 49.5% from the field, 33.3% from the arc and 76.5% from the free throw line, but still had to overcome West Kentucky's 53.9% field goal percentage by forcing 26 turnovers and pulling down 19 offensive rebounds. The victory overshadowed an outstanding performance by the Stars' D.J. Washington who finished the game with a rare triple-double, scoring 27 points, pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists.

With this being their fifth win in a row, ASU Mid-South ties the longest winning streak in school history and moves to 13-8 on the season. The Greyhounds will go for their record-breaking sixth win in a row Monday night at Central Baptist College in Conway. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30pm.

The Greyhounds return to The Dog House Thursday night at 6:00pm against Crowley's Ridge JV before Saturday's double-header against NJCAA Region 2 rival North Arkansas College with the women starting the action at 2:00pm followed by the men at 4:00pm.
