Montgomery, Smith Sign Scholarships
After helping lead the Greyhounds to their best season in school history, sophomores Dee Montgomery and Terrandus Smith have signed NCAA National Letters of Intent to further their academic and athletic careers at 4-year universities.
After helping lead the Greyhounds to their best season in school history, sophomores Dee Montgomery and Terrandus Smith have signed NCAA National Letters of Intent to further their academic and athletic careers at 4-year universities.
Montogmery (5'11", 185 lbs.) signed with NCAA Division I IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne) out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. IPFW finished fourth in Summit League play and earned their fifth postseason bid in a row, appearing in the 2018 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT ). Perhaps even more notably, the Mastadons beat Indiana University for the second year in a row by a 92-72 decision on December 18.
"We are extremely excited about the addition of Dee to our program," Fort Wayne head coach Jon Coffman said. "Most importantly he is an absolute winner and program guy who helped lead his team to a 29-6 record and fifth place finish in the nation. Dee will bring a strong physical presence, athleticism, skill and versatility to our perimeter play next year. His versatility is highlighted by his ability to play with the ball in his hands or off of the ball. He is a perfect fit for our program, because he can really shoot the basketball, play multiple positions and plays with an unselfishness that has highlighted our program's culture during my tenure."
The Horn Lake, Mississippi, native led the Greyhounds to the NJCAA National Tournament where they went 3-1 and took 5th Place, and Montgomery was named the Fred Pohlman National Sportsmanship Award winner given to only one player in the tournament. For the season, he led the Greyhounds in scoring (15.2 points) and assists (4.0 per game), while registering 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game and shooting 43.4% from the field, 36.5% from the three-point line and nearly 70% from the free throw line. He also posted high games of 31 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds.
The two-year starter at point guard was named to the NJCAA Division II All-American Basketball Team for his efforts this season and was also chosen to play in the NJCAA Men's Basketball All-Star Game May 19 at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Montgomery is the first ASU Mid-South student-athlete in school history to receive All-American honors and to be chosen to play in the National All-Star Game.
Smith (6'4", 185 lbs.) signed with Union University located in his hometown area of Jackson, Tennessee, and plays in the Gulf South Conference, one of the premiere NCAA DivisionII conferences in the nation. Union finished 12-16 on the season but returns the GSC Freshman of the Year in Tyree Boykin, the second straight season for Union to claim the freshman of the year.
The product of South Side High School in Jackson, Smith averaged 14.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game with career single-game highs of 35 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists. He also led the Greyhounds with 18 points and pulled down 7 rebounds in the Region 2 Championship, earning MVP honors. The Denmark, Tennessee, native led the Greyhounds in scoring as a freshman, averaging 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.
