"I was proud of our guys not giving up and the constant fight they had, we just can't put ourselves in a hole early and try to play catch up. That is a really good team, and they're #1 for a reason. They turn your mistakes into easy baskets, they have guys who can beat you on any night, they are just very well rounded. Our guys battled though and we would go on runs to cut it to single digits, but they just answered everything we did. We're trending in the right direction at the right time, I just have to make sure our guys see that while we get ready for Thursday for one of our final games at home. It's crazy that February is here and the region tournament is right around the corner, but we have work to do and it all starts back tomorrow in the weight room and film session." head coach Cody Hastings had to say after the game.
The Nighthawks scored the games first points, and the Greyhounds answered taking their first lead after a Je'Marion Westbrook and one. The game would remain close until the Nighthawks forced back to back turnovers and jumped out to a quick 17-8 lead. The Nighthawks were just getting started turning turnovers into points though, as they would score 15 points off turnovers in the first half putting them out to a 13 point halftime lead led by last years Region 2 MVP Nakavieon White. Both teams came out of halftime trading baskets before NPC would stretch their lead to as much as 19 early in the 2nd half. The Greyhounds effort would help cut their lead to 9 a couple times in the second half, but that was as close as they would get. Every run the Greyhounds made, the Nighthawks would respond with a clutch basket time and time again earning their 20th straight victory on the season.
Je'Marion Westbrook led the Greyhounds with 19 points and also pulled down 5 rebounds and dished out 5 assist. High school teammates Chris Martin and Davonta Tucker would both go for 17 points each. Jesse Washington rounded out the double digit scoring with 10 points 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Sophomore point guard Kyrin Dock pitched in 8 points and 6 assists.
ASU Mid-South will host UA Cossatot on Thursday, February 8th in The Dog House. Tip-off is set for 7:30, following the women's game.
