"What an emotion night. Personally, I had to take a minute in the locker room after the guys ran out just to be able to take a couple deep breaths and get myself together. These sophomore's will have a special place in my heart for the rest of my life being my first ever sophomore class as a head coach. I know when coach Parker told them the news of him leaving they could have wanted to test the waters and look into transferring, but they believed in me and wanted to come back. I love those guys, and can't wait to see what the future holds for them. On a night where the sophomore's get a lot of recognition, I couldn't be more proud of this entire group for getting the job done tonight. Credit to South Ark, they came out more aggressive, physical, and played harder in that first half and made us have to work for every little thing we got. I challenged our guys at halftime to flip the roles and they did just that. They are finding ways to win, and really what it takes on a night to night basis to get the job done. We have our final regular season game at Cossatot Saturday, so we just have to keep working at it and keep this thing rolling." an emotional Cody Hastings after the game.
It took the Greyhounds almost 2 minutes to find their first points of the game as Davonta Tucker would find Jesse Washington for his first of 7 made 3's on the night. Greyhounds would then go scoreless for the next 5 minutes until Samuel Chapin found a cutting Je'Marion Westbrook for a layup, and to get themselves going in a groove. The Stars would have a 9 point lead early, but once the Greyhounds fought back the teams would stay between 1-2 possessions of each other for the remaining of the half. The Stars would take a slight advantage heading into the half as Jamarian Cato would hit a 3 as the buzzer sounded giving South Arkansas a 36-33 lead.
The scoring started early and often for the Greyhounds in the 2nd half, as they would outscore the Stars 56-38 in the final 20 minutes capped off by not 1, but 2 monster throw downs from Je'Marion Westbrook. The Greyhounds would push a 4 point lead with just over 9 minutes in the half to 17 with 6:30 remaining in the game which would be the largest lead for either team. From that point on the Stars would trail by double figures for the remainder of the game.
Jesse Washington would lead the Greyhounds with 32 points shoot 7/10 from 3. Washington also added 10 rebounds and 6 assist. Je'Marion Westbrook added 20 points and 9 rebounds. For the 2nd game in a row, Kyrin Dock fell an assist short of a double double scoring 10 points and dishing out 9 assist. Dock would also add 6 rebounds. Freshman Davonta Tucker and Darren Wallace each added 9. Tucker also grabbed 7 rebounds. Chris Martin pitched in 7 points, and Samuel Chapin with 2.
The Greyhounds travel to UA Cossatot, Saturday, February 24 as they take on the Colts. Cossatot defeated the Greyhounds in their earlier matchup 71-67 in The Dog House. Tip-off is set for 4:00pm.
