Using consistent defense to limit the nation's third-highest scoring offense, the Greyhounds (13-4) heated up in the second half to get a 97-86 win over the North Arkansas College Pioneers (14-4) in an NJCAA Region 2 game Saturday at The Dog House.
The Pioneers entered the game averaging 102.5 points per game while shooting 49.6% from the field and 37.4% from the three-point line, but were limited to 33.0% field goal shooting and 27.8% from the arc. The Greyhounds also helped themselves by controlling the boards with a 59-44 advantage while shooting a solid 47.8% from the field.
North Arkansas hit their sixth three-pointer to beat the buzzer at the end of the first half to take a 42-39 lead into halftime. Dee Montgomery led the Greyhounds with 13 first-half points while K.J. Patrick hit for 10.
But the Greyhounds took the lead back at the 11:00 minute mark in the second half and never looked back as Montee Randle scored 12 of his 14 points and Kamron Rose scored 10 of his 12 points in the second stanza. Seven Greyhounds scored in double-figures led by Patrick's game-high 19 while Terrandus Smith finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Montgomery and Randle both finished with 14, Terrikous Smith scored 11, Trevor Banks chipped in 10 points to go with Rose's 14 points and 12 boards, his team-leading fifth double-double of the season.
The win gives ASU Mid-South the home court to host the NJCAA Region 2 playoff on Saturday, March 3, with the winner advancing to play in the District XIII playoff the following weekend.
The Greyhounds are in a stretch of playing five games in ten days, and next up is a road swing that includes games in Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee in the next six days. Their first road game is in Paducah, Kentucky, as they play at West Kentucky Monday at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Northwest Mississippi Community College Thursday and Rhodes College on Saturday.
