Greyhounds Fall on Last-Second Shot in Illinois

The Greyhounds blew a 4-point lead in the final minute of play as Terry Ford's jumper hit the backboard twice and used all of the rim before falling through with 0.7 seconds remaining to give Black Hawk College-Moline a 59-58 victory on the final day of the Fairfield Inn Classic in Quincy, Illinois.

After trailing 27-24 at the half, the Greyhounds held an 8-point lead, 37-29, after a Garret Finley jump hook with 13:18 left in the game. But the Braves scored the next 7 points before a Jared Smith free throw broke the run. The Greyhounds could never pull away as they shot an abysmal 18.8% from the three-point line and only 64.3% from the free throw line. Meanwhile Black Hawk shot a season-high 53.8% from the arc and 72.7% from the free throw line to stay within striking distance.

The Greyhounds held a 1-point lead until Jalen Lynn's three-pointer with 2 seconds left on the shot clock gave the Greyhounds a 58-54 cushion with just 45.4 seconds remaining. But the Braves would counter with a three-pointer of their own on the next possession, and the Greyhounds uncharacteristically turned the ball over against the press to give Black Hawk the final possession they would need for the upset.

Zach Byrd led the Greyhounds with 13 points and 8 rebounds, and Ike Moore finished with 12 points and 9 boards while Garret Finley tallied 12 points and 6 rebounds. Lynn, the Greyhounds' leading scorer, finished with 9 points on only 9 shots and a game-high 4 assists as the Braves shadowed him the entire game.

The Greyhounds fall to 4-1 on the season and return to the friendly confines of The Dog House Monday against Northwest Mississippi Community College in what will be their sixth game in 11 days to start the season. The women tipoff the action at 5:30pm with the men scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
