The Greyhounds had to find a way to win on the road despite two starters being unavailable or limited as they took a 96-85 victory Thursday at West Kentucky Community & Technical College in Paducah.
Starter Christian White did not make the trip with an undisclosed illness, and Ike Moore was saddled with fouls, playing only 11 minutes. In addition, the Greyhounds were playing their ninth game in 20 days and third road game in a row in the last six days as they enter a much kinder schedule in February.
The West Kentucky Stars shot out of the gate quickly with a fast and furious pace, going up 9-0 before the Greyhounds went on a 9-0 run of their own to even the score. But the Stars then began building the lead to 11 points at 29-18 before the Greyhounds battled their way back to trail 46-42 at the half.
The Stars then pulled away again to start the second half and led 61-53 at the 15:22 mark before ASU Mid-South started the comeback with a Garret Finley jump hook, and in less than five minutes a 13-0 run gave the Greyhounds a 66-61 lead at the 11:43 mark capped by a Jalen Lynn three-pointer. The Greyhounds then stretched it to 75-65 on two Kevin Fulton free throws at the 9:19 mark, and a Zach Byrd dunk in transition made it 81-70 at the 7:12 mark. West Kentucky never got closer than 6 points the rest of the way.
Jalen Lynn led all scorers with 26 points while dishing out a team-high 5 assists, but it was the performance of two others that helped the Greyhounds get their sixth win in a row. Zach Byrd tied the school record for double-doubles in a season, collecting his seventh of the year with an impressive 17-point, 17-rebound performance. And Garret Finley earned his first double-double as a Greyhound by scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Kevin Fulton also added 16 points, going 10-for-10 from the free throw line.
ASU Mid-South (17-5) finishes the month of January with an 8-2 record as eight of the ten games were on the road. February sees the Greyhounds at home in seven of eight contests as well as only two games per week the rest of the way after three straight weeks of playing three games each week. The Greyhounds begin their homestand Saturday at 4:00pm against Region 2 opponent South Arkansas Community College before hosting Crowley's Ridge College junior varsity team Monday at 6:00pm.
